Safety Certificates

10 July 2020

It’s true that electrical safety has come a long way, but that’s only true as long as we don’t become complacent.

Electrical energy is one of the most dangerous forms of energy we are exposed to every day. And if installed incorrectly, it could prove to be fatal. It is so important to engage a licensed and qualified electrician for any electrical works that you need completed. A quality electrician will always provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety (VIC).

A Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) is a legal document that confirms that electrical works completed in the home or business complies with the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and the Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 2009.

Every state has different names and regulations for their certificates; Energy Safe Victoria is the independent regulator responsible for electricity safety in Victoria. They are in charge of the management of Certificates of Electrical Safety in the state.

Only a qualified and licensed electrician can complete and issue a COES upon completion of electrical testing and commissioning work. They are responsible for works carried out, and they will ensure that they comply with Australian Standards.

A COES should be issued when any form of electrical installation works has been completed. Anything from replacing light switches, switchboard works, installing lighting… these will all need COES to be issued.

When you receive your COES, always check that the details are all filled out correctly and look out for a certificate number and barcode by Energy Safe Victoria. There will be a small charge to you for the certificate, as ESV will charge us to create one, and we spend time making sure the document is correct and complies. Whatever the cost, they are worth it, just for the peace of mind that you’re covered if anything goes wrong.
